Born and raised in Central Wisconsin, Jay had a very successful career in Agri-Business, mainly in the potato industry. In 1990 he sold his company and with his wife, Amy, retired to Bonita Springs. During his years before retirement he had the privilege of serving as a director for many companies and organizations both locally and nationally.

Having success in developing and managing several companies and always having an interest in politics, when Bonita Springs incorporated he decided to run for a Council position. After being elected as Councilman for District 2, the Council elected him to also serve as Deputy Mayor. He also serves on the Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council. While there, he was given the task of representing the Regional Planning Council on the Estero Bay Agency on Bay Management.

With the encouragement and support of family and friends he decided to seek the office of Mayor in 2004 when the position became available. On March 9th, 2004 the voters of Bonita Springs elected him as Mayor of Bonita Springs.
